This is a SUPER Easy Healthy Instant Pot Shepherd’s Pie Recipe. As long as your ground meat is softened. This recipe takes about 45 minutes or less to make.

Instant Pot recipes are such a great thing to have on hand during the cooler months, they also are great when you don’t feel like cranking up your oven in the heat of the year. That being said, here is a great recipe for an easy shepherd’s pie.

What Kind Of Meat To Use

We always mostly use ground beef in this shepherd’s pie recipe, but you can use whatever you have on hand… Ground beef, ground lamb, ground chicken, or ground turkey. They all work great so it is just whatever you prefer.

What other ingredients can I add to bring even more flavor?

One of the things that makes this comfort food a great recipe, is that you can add ingredients with little to no consequence, as long as it pairs well. Some people like to add a couple of tablespoons of tomato paste, or a little more spice like cayenne pepper to this traditional recipe. You can also top it with cheddar cheese or hot sauce if that is what you like.

What are some good sides to add to this healthy shepherd’s pie recipe?

Our favorite is steamed green beans with salt and butter. We have also paired it with mixed vegetables or a salad. Really any steamed vegetable or salad goes well with it.

What kind of potatoes to use in this shepherd’s pie?

So, not always most of the time for this Easy Healthy Instant Pot Shepherd’s Pie Recipe, we try to stick to organic red potatoes as our research has shown us, that those are the healthier option. We have used white potatoes as well, so again if that is what you have on hand just use it!

Here are some of the thoughts on the differences between white and red potatoes…

“Is red potato healthier than regular potato?

After taking into account the mineral density, the vitamin density, the macronutrient balance, the sugar-to-fiber ratio, the sodium-to-potassium ratio, and the phytochemical profile, red potatoes are the healthiest potato with data from the USDA Food Database.”

“The Healthiest Potatoes have More Phytochemicals

Phytochemicals encompass a broad swath of nutrients found in plants that we are only just starting to research in more detail regarding health. Some, like lycopene, lutein, and certain flavonoids have some of the most research to-date. And although most of them do not have recommended dietary intake references or have definitive data regarding their precise health benefits, the research is starting to pile on in their favor. The following chart shows the concentration of some key phytochemicals found in the USDA Food Database for these potatoes.

Red potatoes contain the most of all three phytochemicals examined. They possess the most quercetin, a flavonoid found to possess some anti-cancer and anti-inflammatory properties. Red potatoes also contain the most lutein and choline, other phytochemicals that have shown health benefits such as protection against degrading eye health.”
