Coconut Sugar Vs. Brown Sugar, let’s talk this whole food ingredient, one of my favorites!
Okay, before I jump in here with all the amazing benefits of this yummy sweet treat, I want to preface this with saying, every once in awhile, I still use brown sugar…
Wait what?? Yes, I still do. VERY rarely, but I am not judging if you still do.
It just depends on my mood. However, more often than not I use coconut sugar and add in black strap Molasses. I will leave the recipe for making your own Coconut Brown Sugar down below.
How coconut sugar is made!
Learning the process of coconut sugar was really amazing, they do there best to keep it in it’s rawest form, which I LOVE!
I love to be able to create recipes with budget friendly whole foods in their most natural state. It usually means more health benefits when consuming it!
Quick Google Search For the Process Of Coconut Sugar
“Harvesters tap coconut palm sap by cutting into the tree’s flower-bud stem to access its nectar. Producers mix the sap with water, boil it into a syrup, and allow it to dry and crystallize. Afterward, they break the dried sap apart to create sugar granules that resemble regular table or cane sugar.”
The process is very similar to making maple syrup, which most if not all of us are familiar with.
It’s straight to the point with very little processing.
Brown Sugar – In the Process
I wish I had enough space in this post to share the processing of white sugar, which usually is the sugar being used in the brown sugar version you probably get from your local grocery store.
Funny enough, I happened to learn how white sugar was processed, when one day, my daughter asked me if we could watch a video about it for a school project. Watch it we did, and boy does it bring some perspective.
If you want to see that process, youtube has several videos out that shows the process white sugar goes through before it is sold to the consumer! I highly recommend taking some time to research it, it is very eye opening the level of processing it goes through.
Let’s talk 3 of my favorite coconut sugar benefits.
- Amazing bone healthy minerals
- Vitamin C great immune building
- Raw antioxidants
Minerals
Coconut sugar contains iron, zinc, and calcium, as we all know those are SUPER important minerals. Those minerals promote bone health.
Raw Antioxidants
Coconut sugar is just dehydrated coconut sap, that being said, it is considered a raw food—this means that it retains all the rich antioxidants found in the original source.
Antioxidants can fight off the oxidation of cells in our bodies, which can also help combat aging. Not that anyone can stop themselves from getting older, but hey, you could get older healthier!
On top of all that, Vitamin C is considered one of the top immune system builders, so the more places you can get it from your food sources the better, right? In my opinion, YES!
Vitamin C
Besides Vitamin C being considered one of the top immune system builders, to me, the more places you can get it from your food sources, again, the better!
Food is medicine, and that statement is SO absolutely true! We are what we eat, if we eat toxins, we are going to be be very unhealthy toxic people. If we choose as many whole foods as we possibly can afford and get our hands on, this only enhances our health.
Coconut Sugar can make your recipes taste very caramelly!
Is that even a word? If not, it should be…
Ok, maybe this isn’t a health benefit but it certainly is a delicious benefit. So, I believe it should count as a health benefit in this post!
I will be at some point sharing my “Million Dollar Cookie Recipe” It is my absolute favorite cookie, bar none!
When I started adding coconut sugar to that recipe, it took that cookie to places I never knew it could go!
