OK, its finally time to share my 3 best Laundry Hacks for busy moms!
We all have been there, piles of laundry by the dryer waiting to be folded. Kids don’t have that shirt they need to wear because they forgot to toss it in the basket… Whoops!
If I am completely honest though, I don’t know if I have every been 100% done with ALL of my laundry. Close but, there always seem to be that stray dish cloth that seems to call all my laundry skills into question.
That being said these are not hacks to show you how to be perfect in keeping up with your laundry but, just to maybe help you out a bit!
What if I told you there was a way to stay on top of laundry a little more?
Best Laundry Hacks For Busy Moms # 1 – Laundry Basket In Each Room
Ok, so I have heard from a lot of laundry people not to put a laundry basket in your kid’s room. I am going to just say here, I disagree with that, at least for my home. Here is why…
I remember, I think it was when I only had four kids, I was doing a playdate with a woman who had been widowed at a very young age. She then married a man that had six kids, which I think brought their combined total to ten children.
This lady had ten children, and she seemed very organized. So, I asked for some of her best laundry hacks for busy moms… Well, because I was desperate!
She told me that every bedroom in her house had a laundry basket and that is where the dirty laundry went for those who slept in that room.
Her Reasons For This Just Made Sense
- It kept her laundry room cleaned out which helped with her sanity.
- It taught the kids that they were responsible for their laundry being placed in the laundry basket
- Lastly, she was able to assign a day to each room… Which brings me to my next hack!
Your kids should be able to do their own laundry!
Ok, I get that some moms or dads like the idea of just doing the laundry themselves or they are the “just do one load a day” of everyones, and call it good. That is definitely not me and I know far too many other moms that this doesn’t work for either.
That’s when our kids come in handy! From the ages of six and up, I expect my kids to at the very least fold their clothes and put them back in their drawers. Do I expect perfection? By no means! Just effort, and they usually have a bigger kids who buddies up with them, or I just do it with them.
Surprisingly, kids love responsibility, it makes them feel like they are apart of something bigger. It shows them how important their roll in the family is.
Best Laundry Hacks For Busy Moms #2 – Assign Each Room A Day
In our home, we have a boys and a girls room. They each get a day. Both boys are responsible to wash, dry and put away their clothes. The two oldest girls are responsible to do the same on their day.
I do have my to youngest girls, sit and help fold with the two bigger girls. And even though my three year old can’t do much, it just makes her feel included.
My husband and I just run our clothes in whatever load I run each day, we used to have our own laundry day. However, I have found it is way easier for us just to toss our in daily.
This is how a week at a glance of laundry goes for us…
- Sunday – It’s a catchup day for all the weekend laundry
- Monday- Girls laundry day
- Tuesday – Boys Laundry day
- Wednesday – Its another catchup day, and wash the bathroom rugs
- Thursday- We wash all the bath towels
- Friday- We wash all the sheets and any stray dish clothes, hand towels or extras we find laying around.
And hey, your schedule can look completely different, this is just an idea of what works for us as an example. You know your household, and can better determine what days are best for your family laundry rotation.
Best Laundry Hacks For Busy Moms # 3 – The One Bath Towel Rule
Okay, this was a trick I learned from my mother in-law. It is something I have literally done since the beginning of my marriage.
Right before each of my kids were born I bought them a colored bath towel that was/is just theirs.
It not only helped me know whose was whose, it made it so they only used one towel a week.
That is right, I gave them one towel and one hanger. After each bath that week, we put the towel back on the hanger and left it in the closet.
On towel washing day, we washed them all and repeated the same routine weekly.
Although it is not necessary to do the different colored towels, for my mind it just helped.
As an example the kids all were colored in this order…
- Child One- royal blue
- Child Two- hot pink
- Child Three- green
- Child Four- dark purple
- Child Five – light pink
- Child Six – light purple
My oldest has used his for 12 years! I am thinking of replacing it on his 13th birthday… But, I promise you, it saves SOOO much washer space and extra loads of laundry with this towel system.
That is all the laundry hacks I have up my sleeve for now. I will share my DIY laundry soap here soon! Until then, I hope this helps at least give some inspiration for dealing with the overwhelming laundry piles you may be dealing with.

Love this! I also do the one towel for each kid and they each have their own color. It’s such a great system. ❤️

Yes, that has made laundry feel SO much less daunting! I LOVE the one towel per person system!

We do the one towel rule here also. They all have the same color towel with their name embroidered on it.
But everyone has 2 wash clothes with their own fancy color.
I’m going to have to consider the laundry hack of each room washing their own laundry 🤔 this would make things SO much easier! I really do like it.
I’m not sure if I trust the younger boys (9,7) washing yet. Our washer and dryer have had some serious issues since we have started our 12 year old doing laundry 😂 let’s just say we’ve found bibles, pull ups, and various things that are not laundry in the washer and dryer🙃😂
